ところが21世紀の海戦は違います。おたがいにはるか彼方に位置しながら、レーダーで探り合い、対艦ミサイルを撃ち合う戦いです。

　これでは装甲をつけて艦そのものを頑丈にしても、大した意味がありません。現代の対艦ミサイルの威力ならば多少の装甲をつけたところでたかがしれています。

　そして何よりレーダーのアンテナが問題です。アンテナまで装甲で覆うことはできないません。よって、いくら装甲を張っても、アンテナだけは当たれば早期に壊れてしまいます。

　そうなると目を潰されたも同じで、もうほとんど何もできません。たとえ一発目の対艦ミサイルを装甲によって堪えても、レーダーを無くした艦は二発目、三発目と一方的にミサイルを撃たれ、結局は撃破されてしまうでしょう。

　つまり現代では重厚な装甲をみにまとっても、あまり意味がないのです。むしろ余計に艦を重くして、無駄なエネルギーを消費させてしまいます。軍艦が装甲をつけず、昔より脆くなったは、こういうわけです。
